Winter Soldier

The cries of war dampen the air.
What can the choiceless soldier do?
Nothing! but fight the double pain of cold and war.

He tells his betrothed
That he shall return,
With a certainty
That ceases to exist.

Love and fear stroll in her eyes
As he kisses her goodbye,
Allowing the defilement of his manliness
By the tears that roll briskly down his cheeks.

His heart melts with fear
And waxes stronger with courage,
As bullet and shelling sounds draw nearer
While being conveyed to the battlefield,
Where his doom may become inevitable.
Not knowing if his body and soul will remain united when he returns home.
